14.23 Public attitudes

A survey of public opinion in Western Australia during 1988 showed that on the basis of public credibility, tobacco industry representatives rated lower than used car salesmen. Around 75% of the sample considered statements made by the tobacco industry to be 'not at all believable', and only 4% of the sample thought them 'very believable'. Doctors had the highest credibility rating, and tobacco industry representatives the lowest (Table 14.10).(206)
